Oxidation of melatonin by taurine chloramine
Abstract: Melatonin is widely known for its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is one example of an endogenous oxidant that is promptly neutralized by melatonin. Melatonin also inhibits myeloperoxidase, the enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of chloride to HOCl. Taurine is the most abundant free amino acid in leukocytes. In activated neutrophils, taurine is converted to taurine chloramine (Tau-NHCl) through a reaction with HOCl. In addition, the related compound taurine bromamine (Tau-NHBr) can be released by neutrophils and eosinophils. The aim of this study was to investigate the reactivity of Tau-NHCl and Tau-NHBr with melatonin. We found that melatonin can react with either Tau-NHCl or Tau-NHBr, leading to the production of 2-hydroxy…
Ramelteon attenuates age-associated hypertension and weight gain in spontaneously hypertensive rats
The neuroendocrine theory of aging suggests the common mechanisms of developmental (prereproductive) and aging (postreproductive) processes and identified a cluster of conditions (hypertension, obesity, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, menopause, late onset depression, vascular cognitive impairment, impairment of immune defense, and some forms of cancer) as age-associated neuroendocrine disorders (AAND). Obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes were later described as metabolic syndrome (MetS). Because melatonin attenuated development of MetS is age-dependent, that is, in young and old, but not in middle-aged rats, we studied the effect of the selective melatonin agonist, Ramelteon, on the two core symptoms of MetS/AAND: hypertension and body weight gain in spontaneously hype…

New Dr. Pinkus’ Sublingual Sleep Formula
By age seventy, people produce a fraction of the melatonin they once did. Further complicating the sleep issue, excessive stress, prescription drugs, and alcohol all block melatonin, contributing to poor quality sleep. Dr. PInkus' Sublingual Sleep, a new triple-action supplement, includes melatonin, magnesium and Vitamin B-1 to relax muscles, calm nerves, and quickly disperses nutrients directly into the body to promote restorative sleep.
